Our Standard

The Work You Don't See

Paint is the last thing that goes on your house, and the easiest part of the job. Whether a finish holds up comes down to everything that happens before it. Here's what that looks like on a wood exterior with failing paint.

01Wash & Check

Pressure wash or soft wash to clear dirt, chalking and mildew, then a moisture reading on the wood before anything goes on it.

02Remove Failure

Failing coatings taken back to sound wood with a PaintShaver and carbide scrapers — not painted over and hoped for.

03Bond & Prime

A bonding primer across the surface, with bare wood spot-primed in an oil-based blocker to seal it and stop tannin bleed-through.

04Feather & Sand

Every hard edge sanded and feathered flat so the new finish reads smooth instead of showing every old paint line.

05Finish

Premium Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams coatings, applied in the right conditions with the right number of coats.

The same standard carries indoors. Skim coating, seam work and surface correction happen before finish paint so repairs disappear instead of telegraphing through the final coat.

If a surface isn't ready for paint, it doesn't get painted.

SMT Painting & Carpentry LLC is a locally owned painting and home improvement business based out of New Milford, serving Litchfield and Fairfield Counties. We focus on quality prep, clean workmanship, and lasting results across interior and exterior painting, cabinet finishing, and carpentry projects.

SMT is a husband-and-wife business, and we take it seriously. We believe hard work pays off, and it shows in the details: the prep you’ll never see, and the clean cut lines and tight trim joints you’ll notice every day. Painting, carpentry and drywall all come from the same skilled hands, so a job goes from rotted trim to finished paint without being handed off. From the first call to the final walkthrough, we keep it professional: on time, easy to reach, and respectful of your home.

1Free Walkthrough

We walk the property together, talk through what you want, and I look at what the surfaces actually need.

2Emailed Estimate

Within a few days of the walkthrough, I email you a detailed estimate covering the scope, prep, products and price, written in plain language.

3Scheduling

We lock in dates that work for you, with a realistic timeline and weather contingency built in.

4Preparation

Washing, removal of failing material, repairs, priming, sanding, masking. The part that takes the longest.

5Application

Premium coatings applied at full specification, in the right conditions, at the right thickness.

6Final Walkthrough

We walk it together. Anything not right gets corrected before I consider the job finished.

Our Warranty

The warranty is tied to the scope we actually perform. Proper preparation matters because a finish can only perform as well as the surface underneath it.

1-Year Workmanship Warranty

Qualifying painting and carpentry work is backed by our written one-year workmanship warranty under normal service conditions, as detailed in your estimate. If a covered issue related to our workmanship appears within that period, we come back and correct it. Product and manufacturer warranties apply separately.
